Our services

Opportune Tech LLC provides IT consulting and managed IT services from Overland Park, Kansas. The five areas below are the work we do. Each one can be engaged on its own.

IT strategy

Most technology problems are not really technical. They are decisions that were never written down: which systems the organization depends on, who is responsible for each one, what happens when one of them fails, and what should change next.

An IT strategy engagement starts with an inventory of what you run today. From there we produce a written plan that states what to keep, what to replace, what to add, and the order those changes should happen in, with the reason for each step.

Typical work in this area

  • Inventory of hardware, software, accounts and data stores
  • Review of how work actually flows through those systems
  • Identification of single points of failure and undocumented dependencies
  • A written plan with sequencing and the reasoning behind it
  • Review of the plan with the people who have to carry it out

Cybersecurity

Security work begins with seeing what is actually configured, not what is assumed to be configured. Accounts that were never closed, devices that never receive updates, and backups that have never been restored are the common findings.

After the review we do the hardening work itself, then keep watching the result. Security is not a document; it is a set of settings that drift over time and need to be brought back.

Typical work in this area

  • Account and access review, including former staff and shared logins
  • Device update status, disk encryption and endpoint protection
  • Backup configuration and a test restore to prove it works
  • Network and remote-access settings review
  • Ongoing monitoring and correction of configuration drift

Cloud solutions

Cloud services remove the need to maintain physical servers, but they replace that work with configuration work. Done carefully, a move to the cloud improves availability and makes backup straightforward. Done carelessly, it produces surprise costs and data that nobody can locate.

We handle the migration of workloads, mail and files, configure the service properly on arrival, and then manage it. Cost control is part of the configuration, not an afterthought.

Typical work in this area

  • Selection of the right service for each workload
  • Migration of mail, files and applications with minimal downtime
  • Identity, permissions and sharing configuration
  • Backup and retention setup within the cloud service
  • Ongoing cost review so unused capacity is removed

Software development

We build software for a defined business process, where an off-the-shelf product does not fit and a spreadsheet has stopped being adequate. The aim is a tool that matches how the work is actually done, rather than forcing the work to match a tool.

Development includes the maintenance that follows. Software that nobody maintains becomes a liability within a year, so every build has an owner and an update path agreed before it goes into use.

Typical work in this area

  • Defining the process the software has to support
  • Building the application and the data model behind it
  • Import of existing records where they exist
  • Training the people who will use it every day
  • Maintenance, updates and ownership after launch

Managed IT services

Managed IT services means the day-to-day administration of your technology has a named owner. Devices stay patched, backups complete and are tested, accounts are added and removed as staff change, and problems are dealt with before they stop work.

This is the area most organizations stay in after an initial strategy, security or cloud project. It is also the area that prevents the other four from needing to be repeated.

Typical work in this area

  • Patch and update management across devices and servers
  • Backup completion checks and periodic restore tests
  • User account changes as staff join and leave
  • Support for day-to-day problems and questions
  • Monitoring of the systems the organization depends on
